Pressure induced topological quantum phase transition in Sb_2Se_3    [PDF]

Wei Li, Xin-Yuan Wei, Jian-Xin Zhu, C. S. Ting, Yan Chen
Based on the first-principles band structure calculations, we theoretically study the pressure effect on a trivial topological insulator (TI) Sb_2Se_3 and show that there is a topological quantum phase transition occurring from a trivial TI to a non-trivial strong TI at a critical pressure value Pc ~ 0.35 GPa. This pressure induced topological quantum phase transition is confirmed by the bulk energy gap evolution as a function of the pressure, energy band structure with "band inversion", the Z_2 topological invariant, and the existence of the Dirac-like topological surface states. Our calculations can be tested by both spectroscopy and transport experiments.
