Chaos, Reversibility and Yield in Amorphous Solids Under Periodic Shear    [PDF]

Ido Regev, Turab Lookman, Charles Reichhardt
A fundamental problem in the physics of amorphous materials is understanding the transition from reversible to irreversible plastic behavior and its connection to yield. Currently, continuum materials modeling relies on phenomenological yield criteria as parameters extracted from experiments. However, in many cases the transition from elastic to plastic behavior is gradual, which makes it difficult to identify an exact yield point. Here we show that amorphous solids under periodic shear undergo a transition from deterministic, periodic behavior to chaotic, irregular behavior as a function of the strain amplitude. In both deterministic and chaotic regimes localized particle rearrangements are observed. We associate the point of transition from deterministic to chaotic behavior with the yield strain and observe two routes to chaos: transient chaos and period doubling. This opens the possibility of elucidating the physical causes of yield in amorphous solids (LA-UR-13-20592).
